My Internship

As I sit here in my classroom with my Pre-K/K students I am watching them use the computer. Most of my students are on http://www.pbskids.com/ they are playing games regarding reading, math and adventures or their favorite show games as well. I find it very striking that my students are able to access a computer so well. When I was in Kindergarten I was not able to use a computer they were not as popular. My students are able to type in word documents and access almost every function for the internet. It has been a joy making relationships with them this semester. I can not wait to see what my fall internship has in store for me.

My Foundations of Early Education Class.

In class on Thursday, Apri 19th, 2012. My teacher lectures on Reggio Emilia theory of teaching. We watched a short video clip on youtube regarding the use of technology is the classroom. This particular class was using a SMART board to facilitate a lesson. The grade being taught was 2nd, the students were each given a clicker to use in order to click on the question regarding the book they were reading in class. Also children were also able to discuss why they felt the answered the question correctly. I thought it was very interesting.

Pro and Cons of Social Media within the classroom.

I recently read and article regarding the "Pro's and Con's of Social Media in the classroom". This article engaged in the different social websites used in the classroom such as facebook, twitter, and linkedin. Which provides a platform where peers or (users) can dialog, exchange ideas, and find answers to questions. Some pro's that were listed in the article were discussions through social websites, enhance student engagement, which is an effective way to increase student engagement and build better communication skills. Furthermore improve communication among students and teachers. Teachers can create facebook pages to post homework or assignments students have to do.
Some cons that were listed were social media can be a distraction. Many students use twitter, Facebook etc withing the classroom while teachers are lecturing. Also cyber bullying can be disrupted when it comes to and education. Students who have social account can be bullied through the computer from individual who may not like them, or find them to look "odd". Researcher have found that 22 percent of college students admit to being harassed online. Lastly some individuals are concerned that while real digital stream may create a safe harbor for students who are uncomfortable expressing themselves. This can cause students to miss a valuable lesson in real life social skills.

Social Bookmarking

Today in class we learned how to create a social bookmarking blog regarding websites that involve Technology in Education. Being that I am a Child Development and Family Studies Major (B-K) I searched for websites regarding Preschooler and Kindergartners using computer within the classroom. My delicious account is http://delicious.com/kaiya_anderson I was just introduced to this remarkable site today, I will continue to use this website to keep up with websites regarding education, and teaching strategies for the classroom. I do believe it is very beneficial for any major.

Field Experience

Since I have became deep into my major which is Child Development and Family Studies (B-K) license. I have been placed in many settings whether it being a public school or day care. I have noticed that children starting at the age of 2 are starting to use the computer to learn. I am assigned to Washington Montessori School at the moment student teaching for Pre-K and Kindergarten students. It is amazing how some are able to log on the computer and use the internet. When I was that age, I had no clue how to work a computer. They weren't as popular as they are now. I have observed many on the computer, and I have noticed that they are truly learning by playing games on Nick Jr. regarding counting, colors, or simply matching objects. As I continue to observe I will post interactions I have encountered with the students.
